The Milligan Foundation is a fiscally sponsored project of Cultural Media Services, which is a California based 501(c)(3) organization. It is a powerful ally for every person in the world who is a victim of domestic violence. Our organization’s mission is focused on an often overlooked challenge of domestic violence; that of enabling people who need to escape lives of abuse, terror, and torture to locate shelter spaces and be able to get there safely as they fight for better lives. The Milligan Foundation’s program ensures that a person is able to find shelter and arrive there safely through securing shelter space, transportation to the shelter or transportation funds, and providing security when needed. The core of the work is getting victims to safety, in a secure manner, in a way that makes it almost impossible for an abuser to track.

There are four primary resources that The Milligan Foundation is creating.
• An immediate need fund for transportation
• Secure transportation to shelters
• A real-time available bed database
• A national network of “Safe Houses”

The core mission of the foundation may be transportation, but the foundation doesn’t overlook the importance of a person’s emotional and mental wellbeing. The operating premise of the foundation is based on Trauma Informed Care. Trauma Informed Care focuses on the known impact of traumatic events from a perspective based on interactions, documentation, notes, and belief. Services are based on an understanding of the vulnerabilities or triggers of trauma survivors that traditional service approaches may exacerbate. Our services are more supportive and put forth a program that avoids re-traumatization.

The most innovative and ground breaking aspect of the foundations trauma informed care based services, will be the environments within the foundation “Safe houses”. It has been a long known psychological fact that what a person sees and feels affects their mental state. With that thought in mind The Milligan Foundation is enlisting the help of award winning interior design professionals and world renowned furniture manufacturers to help create the most supportive environments possible. We seek design industry professionals who have been gifted with the ability to create tranquil interiors for spas, soothing interiors for hotels, and the most welcoming home interiors imaginable. The environments that will be created will remove outside and environmental stressors so that a person is able to focus on inner healing and growth.
Our commitment to creating peaceful, nurturing, and empowering environments is a belief we wish to share and spread to all shelters. The Milligan Foundation will use the connections we make with interior designers, home furnishing manufacturers, contractors, developers, and foundation donors to improve the shelters so many call home. Through our “Room Angel” program, shelters can be matched with available designers, and designers can utilize the product that has already given to us by showrooms and manufacturers. Some of the incredible home furnishing items we receive will find new homes via charity auction, and others will be offered online for a suggested donation price to support our mission of getting people to safety.
